Interview with Skyfever

Skyfever are a four piece alt rock band from Dublin who have been played on Irish, UK and US radio and following the release of their debut EP Means of Escape last year have just dropped a new single, The Returning, on March 31st. I spoke to their guitarist Tyson about the origins of the band, their new single and their hopes for the future.image

Who are Skyfever?

We are a rock band from Ireland comprising of Luke on vocals, Brian on guitar/sounds, Tyson (me) on guitar, Cau on bass, Greg on drums.

Where are you all from and where are you based now?

Luke and I are from Dublin, Brian is from a place called Meath just outside Dublin, Cau is from Brazil and Greg is from Poland. We are all within an hour of our band HQ in Dublin 🙂

How did you come about your name?

That’s an interesting one actually. It was the time of the Redbull Stratos jump and a thought just dropped into my head ‘he must have skyfever’ . On the flip side then, there is the person who is fascinated by the sky and stars, does she/he also have ‘skyfever’?? . I thought it was a cool name for the band I wanted to start and is very instant!

Can you describe your music in one sentence?

Songs that go for the throat and if it happens to hit you in the heart so be it!

How long have you been together and how did you get together in the first place?

I started the band 3 years ago with a batch of songs I wanted to get out there. It took a good while to get the right members at the right time but now we are like a phalanx!

Who were your musical influences growing up?

My dad is classical guitarist and as soon as he saw me pick up a guitar he handed me chord book and The Beatles white & red compilation albums and without saying it basically meant “go forth to the light my son and don’t look back!” I began to be obsessed with how they constructed songs and their progressions and it all went from there. I used to raid his CD collection and came across Bowie’s Space Oddity and that blew my mind!!! Thinking about it, maybe that’s where the idea for ‘skyfever’ was incepted ..thank you David Bowie!!

Then came the influence of the killer instinct of the Oasis’s first two albums , U2’s quest for grandiosity , the dark swagger of Muse too!

Tell me about your latest single, who wrote it and what is it about?

‘The Returning’ is an anti-doubter song. I have positive outlook on most things and always try to find the light and I think we all have overcome doubt in some shape of form so this song captures that feeling.

We wanted our new single to have a vicious delivery , driving guitars and some cool newer model of organ on it so we are very happy with this one. It has just been added to the playlist at Anfield and there are other huge projects in motion for it so watch this space!

The origins of it lie in sport as well! I had a vision of a fighter making a comeback and what would be going through his head. My grandad won a silver medal in boxing in the 1956 Olympics so it was easy to imagine that. At the time I was obsessed with a Daft Punk’s song ‘Alive’ so I guess the song grew from that perfect storm!

Where have you played so far, do you have a favourite venue?

We have played mostly in venues in Dublin so far and our favourite is The Grand Social. It just over the famous bridge in Dublin ,called the Ha’penny bridge which leads to the entrance of the notorious Temple Bar. I am sure many people are aware of that place. It is well and truly bananas!

What are your plans for the next 6 months?

We want to reach as many people possible with our new single . Everyone so far is really believing and feeling it so we want that momentum to snowball! We will be releasing our EP at the end of the summer so we are currently in pre-production for that. People are going to go mad for these songs, we are going for the throat, the heart, the feet and the soul with this one!!!!

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

‘Write a chorus’ – Noel Gallagher

If you were a pudding which one would you be?

Chocolate pudding of course!!

Which band would you most like to support?

U2!

Where would you like to see yourselves in 5 years time

See above question and answer .. We also want to be that bit closer to the quest of writing the perfect song for our hoards of brilliant and manic fans!
